DC Ceiling Fans vs AC Ceiling Fans: Which ceiling fan is best?

There are more and more DC ceilings fans being introduced to the Australian ceiling fans market. As a general rule, DC ceiling fans usually use less energy than other ceiling fans. However, many people are asking what ‘DC’ fans actually are, what advantages DC motor ceiling fans have, and whether DC ceiling fans will really help them save energy, and in turn, save money.
The Technical Talk:

There are two types of electric motors general, AC (Alternating Current), which is electrical current which reverses direction and DC (Direct Current), which, as its name suggests, electrical current which only flows in one direction. Most ceiling fans, as well as most household appliances, use AC motors, as AC is the type of current distributed by power companies.
AC motors function by being connected directly to a power source. This power source is what creates the moment of force required to rotate the motor’s rotor. With DC fans, the direct (AC) power source, connects to a transformer which converts the power to DC. The effect is that it decreases the amount of power used by only using a direct current instead of the alternating current. To then create the force needed to rotate the motor’s rotor, the DC motor uses a system of magnets of opposing polarity.
Please note that current models of ceiling fans with DC motors cannot be connected directly to a DC power source (like solar panels or batteries) and whilst that may change in the future, manufacturers do not seem to currently have plans to provide this facility.
AC vs DC:

The advantages of a DC motor ceiling fan over an AC motor ceiling fan:

In most cases, they use less energy – up to 70% less than a standard AC fan.
    They are generally extremely quiet.
They will often have more speed options, the reverse function on the remote, and are generally faster to start, stop and change speed.
The motor is generally more compact and lighter, which allows for a slimmer motor design.

The advantages of an AC motor ceiling fan over a DC motor ceiling fan:

DC ceiling fans tend to be more expensive when compared to an equivalent AC model. Although you do use less electricity and therefore save money there, it is minimal. For example, if a DC fan saves you 20W per hour of use, and you use it for 10 hrs per day, 100 days per year (all night, all of the summer, on low speed), you save about $3.50 per year (off peak rates).
AC fans can be controlled from a wall control, pull cord or remote, while DC fans can generally only be controlled by remote (very few exceptions – see below*). Remotes are more likely to be lost, broken, run out of batteries. Some DC fans are available with an optional wall controller, at an extra charge.
AC fans are still extremely energy efficient, a standard model will use no more than 80 watts on high speed.

What is right for me?

As with anything, there are many factors that will determine your decision. Ultimately, what is most important to remember is that you can get great quality ceiling fans with either AC or DC motors. Fans which are extremely quiet, don’t wobble and create good air movement. And although AC motors may use more energy than DC motors, they nevertheless use very little energy, equivalent to one or two standard halogen light bulbs on high speed. Compared to most household appliances, especially air conditioners, this is nothing! So once you have worked out your style, budget and function needs, feel confident in going either AC or DC.

Why do we Need a Ceiling Fan?

A ceiling fan is one of the most important appliances in a household. It is also often also one of the most demanded electrical appliances,
The best ceiling fans in India must include features like higher RPM - Rounds per minute, Higher CMM (Throw of Air), low electricity Consumption, Blade Size depending on Room Size, Coil with Copper winding, Double Ball Bearings and a Cut on the blade sufficient to throw enough air around the room. (Only a proper dealer would guide you well depending on your room.)

Ceiling fans are being used since a long time to circulate air in the surrounding. It is the cheapest, most conventional way to increase air circulation in a room and works well for hot and cold weather. It typically brings down the temperature of its surroundings by 7 degrees, making the room cooler.

What are the Types of Ceiling Fans?

Ceiling Fans are built in different types Basic, Decorative, Power Savers.

Basic Ceiling Fans are usually simple to look at with features like 8 Pole Coils , Double Bearings or Single ball Bearings with a bush bearing, Metal Body with a powder Coating or even Aluminium Body, usually these fan consume a power of about 70-80 watts.

A typical summer ceiling fan rotates in a counter clockwise direction. This pushes the cool air upwards, causing hot or warmer air to be displaced in the upward direction. This phenomenon leads to lowering the temperature of the surroundings.
Winter Ceiling fan
A winter ceiling fan helps to increase the room temperature. It rotates in a clockwise direction, pushing the hot air downwards. These ceiling fans are great when are accompanied with energy efficiency features.
What is the typical structure of a ceiling fan?

A typical ceiling fan consists of a few basic parts, a drop rod, blades and lights to add a style statement to your room. The best ceiling fans in India tend to have a great energy efficient system, stylish lights to brighten up the room and a remote control for the light and speed control operations.

Drop rod: A drop rod in a ceiling fan is one of its most important parts. The best ceiling fans have a drop rod that is neither too close to the ceiling nor too high from the floor. An adequate distance of a ceiling fan from the ceiling determines its proper movement.

It has been seen that a ceiling fan must be higher than seven feet from the floor for its proper rotation. The blades of the fan, however, should be at least 2-3 feet from the ceiling and at least one feet away from the side walls.

The height of the ceiling determines the length of the drop rod. A 48-inch drop rod length ceiling fan fits best in a 13 feet high ceiling. A 36 inches long drop rod will fit in a 12 feet high ceiling room.

Blades: The number of blades also help to choose the best ceiling fans for yourself. Although the number of blades does not tend to affect a fan’s performance. Its number is determined by the maximum area it has to sweep. A typical fan comes with 2, 3, 4 or 5 blades.

The number of blades should compliment with the room it is put in so that it does not look oversized for a small room. This situation will also lead to problems in reaching the maximum airflow movement.

Lights: The most creatively designed ceiling fans have lights attached to them in the centre of the blades. These lights bring a beautiful change in the room, by brightening it up. They also tend to use up more electricity than a normal ceiling fan would do.
What are the benefits of owning a ceiling fan?

Versatility from room to room: A ceiling fan is one of the most ignored electrical appliances in your households, but still gives different looks to different rooms. It gives a sense of versatility to your homes, making it more unique just like yourself.
What to look for while choosing the perfect ceiling fan?
Power/Energy Consumption

The best kind of ceiling fans must be energy efficient along with delivering great performances. A higher energy efficient ceiling fan saves up on your electricity bills. Fan manufacturing companies have been provided an energy star rating by The Bureau of Energy Efficiency.

The higher the number of stars that BEE rates a ceiling fan with, the lower is the energy consumption. Also, the use of lights in a fan consumes more energy than any usual ceiling fan.

Airflow is the amount of air that is displaced by a particular ceiling fan per unit time. It is measured in Cubic Metres per minute (CMM). It tells about the quality of a ceiling fan. The best ceiling fans have an airflow measurement greater than 250 CMM.

A good ceiling fan has an airflow measurement of 230-260 CMM. The airflow is responsible to bring down room temperature. It also helps in determining the efficiency of a ceiling fan.
Size of the room and number of blades

The number of blades in a ceiling fan is another major feature that helps to choose among the best available ceiling fans in India.

The accurate number of blades that should be present in a fan is related to the area of the room that it is put in. A ceiling fan generally comes with 2, 3, 4 or even 5 blades, that help to give an additional style statement to your interiors.

The best ceiling fans in India have a lower energy consumption but a greater performance delivering kind of motor.
